Camille (Nina Meurisse), a young and idealistic photojournalist hoping to change the world with her photos, arrives in the Central African Republic in 2013 to cover the civil war between Muslim fighters (the Séléka) and Christian militias (the anti-balaka). She quickly befriends a group of students, and, unable to disengage herself from the atrocities she witnesses and photographs, she ends up getting more deeply involved in the conflict, which eventually proves fatal.
Directed by former documentary filmmaker Boris Lojkine, Camille was shot on location in the very places Lepage visited. The use of the real Camille’s photographs makes us see what she saw, deepening our feel for her and the country she refused to abandon.
Not Rated (violence, war scenes).
Reviews
Sober in its tragic outcome, the film offers several levels of reading. History on the Central African Republic, documentary on the profession of war photographer, drama, as the tension continues to grow until it is resolved. Devastating. Jacky Bornet - Culturebox - France Télévisions
By weaving Camille Lepage’s photos into a fictional biopic structure, Boris Lojkine ensures a disturbing immediacy that transcends standardized narrative. Jay Weissberg - Variety
A touchingly lucid portrait of a photojournalist killed in her prime. Jordan Mintzer - Hollywood Reporter
