Nélie (Lyna Khoudri, Papicha – Virtual Cinema with the SFFF, 2021) is a frontline nurse in 1914. One day, during a bombing, Rose Juillet (Maud Wyler), a young woman on her way to a job with distant wealthy relatives she has never met, dies in front of her. Nélie, seeing her chance at escape from misery, decides to steal the identity of the dead woman. Wearing Rose Juillet’s clothes, she presents herself at the house of Madame de Lengwil (Sabine Azéma), a wealthy widow, and becomes her reader and protégé.

The ruse works beyond the expectations of the kind-hearted Nélie, who settles into a happy and comfortable life as Rose, until the past catches up with her.

Secret Name is based on British writer Wilkie Collins’ lesser known 1873 mystery novel, The New Magdalen.

This film is part of Young French Cinema, a program of Unifrance and Villa Albertine.
